G é Eleição Geral: presidente, governador, senador e deputados. L é Eleição Local (municipal): prefeito e vereador. De 1933 a 1990 o TSE não publica cargo municipal, então esses anos são todos G.
The same office appears twice in the year a place voted on a different date from the rest of the country (because of a postponement, for example).
In 2012, the TSE published the mayoral results for 5,568 municipalities; in 5,567 of them it declared the winner (in the others, the registration of the top vote-getter had been rejected or was under appeal). In the state capitals, 9 mayors were elected in the first round and 17 capitals went to the runoff; nationwide, 50 cities had a runoff. Nationwide, counting both rounds, PMDB elected the most mayors (1,022), followed by PSDB (695) and PT (637). Adding up the votes of the candidates each party fielded in the first round, PT had the most votes: 17.3 million votes (16.73% of the votes cast for candidates).
Mayor is elected city by city. The number next to the abbreviation is how many cities in the state held this election.

Registered voters: voters who could vote. Turnout: how many went to the polls. Abstentions: how many stayed away (registered voters − turnout). Blank and Null: those who turned out but did not choose a valid candidate. Valid: the votes that count for candidates (turnout − blank − null); percentages are calculated on them.

This is not a chamber. Each race here has a single winner; the bar adds up how many city halls each party won nationwide, which measures the party's strength in that election, not a caucus that meets together. Where there was a runoff, its result counts, and each place is counted only once. The total does not add up to 5,568: in 1 the TSE records no one elected: cases of a rejected registration or a dispute still being judged. And this total does not reach the number of municipalities in the country either: the Distrito Federal and Fernando de Noronha do not elect a mayor, and some municipalities had their election annulled and voted only in a supplementary election, counted separately. The party at the election counts: anyone who switched parties after taking office does not change this number.
We show only the state capitals, and the Distrito Federal does not elect a mayor. For any other city, use the search above.

Votes by party for mayor, 2012
Sum of the votes of the candidates each party ran, nationwide. Where the party backed a candidate from another party, those votes count for the other party; so the sum measures the strength of the party's own candidacies, not of the whole party.
