The dashed year didn't have this election here: it opens the closest office, written below.
G é Eleição Geral: presidente, governador, senador e deputados. L é Eleição Local (municipal): prefeito e vereador. De 1933 a 1990 o TSE não publica cargo municipal, então esses anos são todos G.
The same office appears twice in the year a place voted on a different date from the rest of the country (because of a postponement, for example).
In 1996, the TSE published the results for 5,407 city councils, with 58,595 city councillors elected. PMDB elected the most city councillors (13,091), followed by PFL (10,211) and PSDB (8,460). In votes, the party with the most votes was PMDB, with 10.5 million votes (16.33% of the votes cast for candidates). Among the state capitals, the most votes for city councillor went to Eduardo da Costa Paes (PFL), in Rio de Janeiro, with 82,418 votes.
City Councillor is elected city by city. The number next to the abbreviation is how many cities in the state held this election.
Registered voters: voters who could vote. Turnout: how many went to the polls. Abstentions: how many stayed away (registered voters − turnout). Blank and Null: those who turned out but did not choose a valid candidate. Valid: the votes that count for candidates (turnout − blank − null); percentages are calculated on them.
The TSE did not publish valid or null votes in 1996, so the percentage of valid votes is not shown.
58,595 city councillors, split among 26 parties.
This is not a chamber. These are 5,407 city councils added together: the number measures how many city councillors the party elected nationwide, not a caucus that meets together. Each council has its own quotient, so there is no single quotient to show here. It appears on each city's page. The party at the election counts: anyone who switched parties after taking office does not change this number.
