In 1996, there were municipal elections for mayor and city councillor, according to data from Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE). For mayor, 5,408 municipalities voted; counting both rounds, PMDB elected the most mayors (1,306), followed by PFL (935) and PSDB (926). For city councillor, 58,595 were elected; PMDB elected the most city councillors (13,091), followed by PFL (10,211) and PSDB (8,460).
