Eleição in Brazil

Year

The dashed year didn't have this election here: it opens the closest office, written below.

Round

All elections35 anos in Brazil, de 1933 a 2026

G é Eleição Geral: presidente, governador, senador e deputados. L é Eleição Local (municipal): prefeito e vereador. De 1933 a 1990 o TSE não publica cargo municipal, então esses anos são todos G.

The same office appears twice in the year a place voted on a different date from the rest of the country (because of a postponement, for example).

2004

In 2000, 31 cities had a mayoral runoff, 11 of them state capitals, according to data from Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE). PT elected the most state capital mayors in the runoff (5), followed by PSB (2).

Only the states with cities that went to a runoff in this election appear.

Mayor is elected city by city. The number next to the abbreviation is how many cities in the state held this election.

This is not a chamber. Each race here has a single winner; the bar adds up how many city halls each party won nationwide, which measures the party's strength in that election, not a caucus that meets together. Where there was a runoff, its result counts, and each place is counted only once. And this total does not reach the number of municipalities in the country either: the Distrito Federal and Fernando de Noronha do not elect a mayor, and some municipalities had their election annulled and voted only in a supplementary election, counted separately. The party at the election counts: anyone who switched parties after taking office does not change this number.

Only the state capitals that had a runoff appear. In the others, the mayor was elected in the first round. For another city, use the search above.

Votes by party for mayor, 2000

Sum of the votes of the candidates each party ran in the runoff, nationwide. Where the party backed a candidate from another party, those votes count for the other party; so the sum measures the strength of the party's own candidacies, not of the whole party.
