In 1998, 27 senators were elected, one in each state and in the Federal District, according to data from Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE). PMDB elected the most senators in this election (12), followed by PFL (5) and PSDB (4). Together with those elected in 1994, they make up the 81 seats of the Senate. In votes, the PMDB candidates added up to 13.4 million votes (21.67% of the votes cast for Senate candidates in this election).

Elected seats, from the TSE results. This is the composition that came out of the ballot boxes, not the one the chamber had over the legislative term: anyone who switched parties after the election does not change this number. The count adds up those elected, without recalculating the quotient, so it matches the legal size of the chamber. A single party has an absolute majority.
