The alternate senator was not a standalone office: under the 1946 Constitution and the 1950 Electoral Code, the alternate was registered together with the senator, on the same ticket. But the Electoral Courts counted the vote for each name, so the alternate appears here with a vote count of their own, almost equal to the senator's. This is different from the vice president, who was indeed chosen by an independent vote.
Until 1960 the Federal District was the city of Rio de Janeiro. The candidates for deputy, senator and city councillor registered as "DF" in these elections ran there. When the capital moved to Brasília in 1960, the former Federal District became the state of Guanabara, which appears in this database from 1960 to 1974, when it was merged into the state of Rio de Janeiro.
