The dashed year didn't have this election here: it opens the closest office, written below.
G é Eleição Geral: presidente, governador, senador e deputados. L é Eleição Local (municipal): prefeito e vereador. De 1933 a 1990 o TSE não publica cargo municipal, então esses anos são todos G.
The same office appears twice in the year a place voted on a different date from the rest of the country (because of a postponement, for example).
In 1955, Francisco de Assis Chateaubriand (PSD) won the Senate election for Maranhão, with 82.32% of the votes, according to data from Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
1 seat in the Federal Senate.
Elected seats, from the TSE results. This is the composition that came out of the ballot boxes, not the one the chamber had over the legislative term: anyone who switched parties after the election does not change this number. The count adds up those elected, without recalculating the quotient, so it matches the legal size of the chamber.
Each party by its total votes (candidate votes + party-list votes), including those that won no seat.

The standalone Federal Senate election in Maranhão in 1955 was a special election, called as an exception by the Electoral Courts because a seat became fully vacant after the simultaneous resignation of the sitting senator and his alternate. Since the 1955 national calendar had no regular legislative elections (those had taken place in 1954), this extraordinary vote, limited to that electoral district, was the only legally viable way to avoid the state being underrepresented in the National Congress, ensuring that the seat was filled right away by the elected candidate, Assis Chateaubriand, to serve the rest of the term.
