In 1978, Moacyr Dalla (ARENA) won the Senate election for Espírito Santo, with 25.46% of the votes, according to data from Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

Only two parties ran in these elections: ARENA and MDB. The previous party system was abolished by Institutional Act No. 2 of 1965, and Complementary Act No. 4 established that only two organizations could register candidates. The multiparty system was restored by the 1979 reform, and this database records 5 parties in 1982 and 29 in 1986.
