The "second round" for deputies in the 1933 and 1934 elections did not mean voters went back to the polls on another date, but rather a complex method of counting votes on the same ballot, established by the 1932 Electoral Code. In that system of "two simultaneous rounds", citizens voted by writing a list of several names on the ballot. The first round counted only the first name on that list, and those votes were used to distribute seats proportionally among the parties that reached the electoral quotient. Since that calculation almost always left seats empty (the so-called "remainders"), the second round was held right away, counting the other names the voter had written on the same ballot. Those remaining seats were then filled by the candidates with the most votes in that second count, using simple majority. It was therefore a mixed counting system (proportional and majoritarian) carried out all at once on the same voting day, a mechanism that no longer exists in later Brazilian electoral law.

The quotient is the number of votes the party needs per seat (valid votes ÷ seats); the seat goes to the party's most voted candidate. The cutoff is the lowest vote total among those elected (the entry threshold), and it is usually much lower than the quotient. The top non-elected is the highest vote total among those not elected, and it can be higher than the cutoff (it is then highlighted), because the seat belongs to the party before it belongs to the candidate. Learn about the cutoff and the quotient in the tutorial.
